Fabulous birthday fabrics!

I spent last week down in Dover delivering Roman based workshops for Dover Museum. The topic was 'Magic and Medicine' which involved invoking gods, taking blood, amputation and drinking wee. Needless to say it went down excellently well with 7/8 year olds! Should anyone's school fancy something similar just check out our website at Sun Jester www.sunjester.com

Anyway, that means that for the past few years I have always been away from home for my birthday. When I got home and belatedly got my pressies and cards you would never be able to guess what some of my friends had got me ...no? ... fabrics !!

There's some lovely stuff from Elephant In My Handbag (so I will have to check them out especially as the parcel came with a 10% discount voucher) and some equally lovely stuff from Fabric Freedom and purchased from a new shop called 'Craft and Home' which I gather has opened up in Windsor. I can see a jaunt Windsor-wards coming up in the near future!

Don't my mates do well when it comes to choosing colours just for me :) Thank you mates!

Then, because I thought I would show off a bit, I took a photo of the work in progress, which is this paper piecing squashed hexagon (known as Son of Monster because it uses all the scraps from my first one) that is progressing slowly because I really didn't understand what I had taken on! I took about 100 squares to Dover with me to baste and now I am filling in the holes. Which I am finding awkward so I will think of another way to do it later on. Sorry about the shadows. It is, as is typical for me, quite bright!

So then I needed something smaller to work on, with a view to some things I can practice machine sewing with now I am home. So, inspired by the inspirational Kath, here is my first attempt at a house block.

This was interesting as, being somewhat spatially challenged I managed to put my roof on backwards at the first attempt. Luckily, having had a patient teacher (thanks Debs), I took it apart and put it back together. I would probably need to call a builder to put the chimneys in the right place and the colour scheme is bizarre - but then again I was just using scraps to see what would happen.
Looking forward to seeing all the gang again at the next session - 16th July at Sue's.
Keep sewing!!!
